The effects of the MacBook Neo continue to be felt in the PC industry this week.

The Verge has noticed that Microsoft has launched a new "Microsoft College Offer" initiative. Through this offer, university students in the U.S. can receive Microsoft 365 Premium and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate services for free for 12 months by purchasing an eligible PC, and they will also receive a special Xbox controller as a gift.

As announced in a blog post by Microsoft, leading PC manufacturers such as Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo have signed agreements to participate in this program. Microsoft Surface laptops are also included in this offer (although their prices have increased significantly).

Microsoft 365 Premium typically costs $19.99 per month or $199.99 annually, while Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is $29.99. However, the Microsoft College Offer promotion is only available to new subscribers. If you are already subscribed to one of these services, you cannot take advantage of this offer.

“Microsoft usually offers back-to-school discounts on laptops during the summer months, but it is rare for them to present an offer this early,” says Tom Warren. “The timing seems like an early response to the $599 MacBook Neo and the $100 discount Apple offers for eligible students in the U.S.”

College life is full in every sense. Intense schedules, overflowing inboxes, high expectations. The pressure to keep up, stay productive, and always be “on” is real. Windows makes it even easier to prepare for everything college brings – from job searches to exam preparations, game nights to relaxing with friends. Starting today, eligible U.S. students can access great deals on select Windows 11 PCs, and the Microsoft College Offer provides over $500 in additional value for free.

Comment from 9to5Mac

The MacBook Neo offers tremendous value at a list price of $599 — but even better starting at $499 for education buyers.

I don’t think this “Microsoft College Offer” will have any impact. Even if you value Microsoft 365 Premium and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscriptions at full price, it doesn’t close the quality and price gap between these PCs and the MacBook Neo.

Additionally, the free Microsoft 365 Premium offer will be a moot point for some university students. Many universities provide “free” access to students in the U.S. (or provide free access to an equivalent service that they should use instead).
