MagSafe compatible accessory manufacturer Casely has reannounced the recall of Power Pods following reports of new incidents since its initial recall last April. Here are the details.
Power Pods Model E33A Must Be Returned Immediately
Casely, as noted by The Verge, has reannounced the recall of over 429,000 units of the 5,000 mAh Power Pods (Model E33A). This comes nearly a year after the original recall announcement.
In the new recall, the definition of ‘Hazard’ has been updated:
The recalled lithium-ion battery may overheat and ignite, posing a serious risk of injury or death to consumers.
The updated text reflects 28 new incidents reported since last year’s recall. One of these incidents resulted in the death of a 75-year-old woman due to complications from second and third-degree burns after her Casely power bank exploded.
In another incident that occurred two months ago on an airplane, “a 47-year-old woman experienced a fire and explosion while charging her phone with a power bank on the plane, resulting in first-degree burns to the victim.”
Casely stated that consumers “must immediately stop using the recalled wireless portable power banks and contact Casely for a free replacement.” Additionally, users were advised “not to dispose of this recalled lithium-ion battery or device in the trash, general recycling stream (such as street-level or curbside recycling bins), or in used battery recycling bins found at various retail and home improvement stores; as these pose a fire risk.”
Here are Casely’s exchange instructions for owners of the recalled Power Pods:
To receive a free replacement, consumers must visit the company’s website and fill out the online form, submitting two photos; one must show the front of the power bank with the words “Recalled” and the date written on it. The second photo should display the model number on the back of the power bank. The photos should be uploaded to the company’s website from here. Consumers must dispose of the power banks immediately in accordance with local and state regulations.
If you have a Casely Power Pod and are unsure of the model, you can find this information in the text on the back of the device.
If it is model E33A, please follow the instructions on Casely’s recall page as soon as possible.
