According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple is actively testing at least four different frame styles for its upcoming smart glasses project. Apple is relying on superior design taste to stand out from competitors like Ray-Ban Meta Glasses.
The report states that Apple is evaluating designs and plans to release several options with multiple color choices, just like it did during the launch of the Apple Watch in 2015...
It should be noted that these glasses are not augmented reality. They are simple wearable glasses that include integrated cameras, microphones, and sensors. They will be able to relay notifications from your phone, take personal photos and videos, play music, and interact with artificial intelligence features like enhanced Siri.
In terms of functionality, they are like a combination of the Apple Watch and AirPods. The glasses will pair with a connected iPhone to operate most of their features, making them more of an iPhone accessory than a Watch accessory.
Gurman states that the four designs of the Apple glasses currently in testing are as follows:
- Large rectangular frame resembling Ray-Ban Wayfarers
- Thinner rectangular design similar to the glasses worn by Apple CEO Tim Cook
- Larger oval or circular frames
- Smaller, more elegant oval or circular options
Apple is exploring a range of finishes, such as black, ocean blue, and light brown. As with AirPods and Apple Watch, the goal is to create an immediately recognizable design.
Gurman notes that the front cameras of the glasses will be arranged in an oval pattern, surrounded by indicator lights. This will be another design point that distinguishes Apple’s product from its competitors.
Specifically, instead of using plastic, a common material, Apple plans to use acetate, a "durable" and "luxurious" material, for the main body of the glasses.
The smart glasses project is expected to be announced later this year or in early 2027, with the actual launch anticipated in the spring or summer of 2027. It is believed that Apple continues to work on advanced augmented reality glasses with integrated screens, but that timeline is pushed much further into the future.
In the short term, the glasses are part of Apple’s strategy to release a series of AI-focused devices in the coming years. Other upcoming products include AirPods with integrated cameras, a smart home display, and a wearable necklace equipped with cameras.
