I have tested many MagSafe iPhone desk chargers, and most suffer from the same annoying flaw. If it’s not made of solid steel and doesn’t weigh five pounds, it slides on the table when you want to pick up your iPhone or check the screen. You often have to hold the base with one hand while pulling the iPhone with the other. Scosche decided to tackle this issue in a completely different way and developed a new Qi2 home and office mount. Instead of weighted metal bases, it uses a heavy-duty suction pad that securely adheres to your desk or countertop.
MagSafe Monday: Every Monday, Bradley Chambers reviews the latest and greatest products in the MagSafe and wireless charging industry to help you get the most out of your Apple devices that support wireless charging.
As I mentioned earlier, the most interesting part of this charger is the base. It uses a heavy-duty suction pad to stick directly to your desk or bedside lamp. Once locked in place, it doesn’t budge unless you release it. However, it is reusable. The magnets that hold the phone are rare earth neodymium magnets, so they provide a really strong grip. While your iPhone is held securely, the base doesn’t lift with you.
15-watt Qi2 Charging Speed
This Scosche mount supports the latest Qi2 wireless charging technology and provides a full 15 watts of charging speed to your iPhone (if supported). Qi2 is significantly faster than the older 7.5-watt chargers that were once standard.
One of my biggest annoyances with MagSafe gear is realizing I have to open the box and find my own power adapter. Scosche includes a 20-watt USB-C power adapter in the box, along with a cable management clip to keep your desk tidy.
Again, many good products don’t include these, but I love it when there’s one included in the box.
The mount features a 360-degree rotating adjustable head and a smooth rotating base. It’s extremely easy to switch your iPhone from portrait mode for a quick FaceTime call to landscape mode while watching your lunch on the table. Additionally, it works great with StandBy mode if you prefer to use this mount as a bedside lamp next to your headboard.
Review
Overall, a nice charger. It’s one of the first chargers that uses suction instead of a weight-based design. The suction pad design is a simple yet truly useful way to keep your MagSafe device exactly where you want it. When you add in the fast 15-watt Qi2 speeds and the included power adapter, it offers really great value for your home office or bedside lamp. I think there are interesting design elements where even a light suction can be extremely beneficial in a weighted design.
You can purchase the Scosche Qi2 home and office mount directly from Scosche or Amazon.
